Last week, Mikey and I went all the way out to Lake Tahoe for a weekend for my best friend Merry’s wedding. Apologies for this post full of posed photos, haha. Not something I normally do but weddings are weddings and people pose.
We flew in on a Thursday morning and waited around in the Reno airport for an hour or two so we could carpool with another couple renting a car for the wedding.
I didn’t really know what to expect from Lake Tahoe – I was way off geographically, I thought it was in Southern California for some reason. I was expecting palm trees and a kind of ritzy tourist resort – instead it was pine trees and rustic little motels.
We were pretty blown away by the view and by how small Tahoe Vista is.
We were there from Thursday until Sunday and I was afraid it would fly by, but time passed by really slowly actually. It was pure relaxation – reading, hanging out in the water, talking to friends around the fire, hot tubs, etc. Mikey and I spend so many of our weekends trying to get our creative work done – me with drawing and him with music, that we feel like we rarely spend our weekends just relaxing and having fun. It was weird to turn off work mode for real.
Merry and Tim, the bride and groom to be. Merry is one of my oldest friends, we’ve been best friends since kindergarden.
My other oldest best friend, Katie, and Merry’s older sister Rachel. We spent the first evening walking by the water, driving into town to get some groceries, grilling out with the other member’s of the bridal party and the groom’s family, and sitting by the fire.
After dinner, we all went in the hot tub.
I was honestly a little wary ahead of time – I don’t talk to my childhood friends that often and before each time I see them I worry that it will be the time that I suddenly feel distant from them. But without fail, I end up feeling so comfortable and at ease and we catch right up. I’m glad Mikey has had the chance to really get to know some of my oldest friends. They’re the best.
In the morning me and Mikey walked into Tahoe Vista to try to find brunch. Along the way we ogled at all the old signs and fonts on the little lakeside motel signage.
The weather was beautiful the whole trip, 80s during the day, and 50s at night.
Without a car it was actually pretty hard to access things. I pictured a much bigger town but it was pretty sparse! We found a restaurant at a golf course though, within walking distance, and had a really good brunch.
Then we headed out to the water. Katie had already been on the lake all morning and was hounding us to come out and do water stuff. We all grew up on lakes in Michigan so this is how we spent most of our time together as kids.
I obviously couldn’t bring my camera out on the water, so here are two photos I stole from someone else who brought her digital camera out on a kayak. I finally got to try paddle boarding, which was easier than it looked, and really fun. I definitely was pretty sore after the weekend from walking around, paddle boarding, and kayaking.
Everyone out on the water trampoline.
After a fun morning and afternoon on the lake, it was time to get ready for the rehearsal and dinner. Merry and Tim in their rehearsal getups.
Katie and Merry, my two oldest friends! These two are even older friends – since they were babies essentially, and lived a few houses down from one another until they were 18.
I actually don’t know most of Merry’s close friends that she’s made as an adult. It was nice to get to meet them. We’ve lived on different sides of the country since we were 18.

Katie and Kristy. We’re going to their wedding in a couple weeks in Michigan. I can’t wait to see them again so soon and celebrate with them.
The wedding party receiving silly gifts from the bride and groom at the rehearsal dinner.
After dinner, we went for a walk with Katie and Krista to check out a little more of Tahoe.
It was dusk and bats kept swooping low around us.
That evening, our other best buds, Erin and Frances, arrived. All through middle school and high school we called ourselves “the crew.”
My dad and his wife, Sue, also arrived that evening. After the rehearsal dinner, we found them and went across the street to the ice cream joint. The night ended with a s’mores greeting party for all the guests and we caught up with a lot of other old friends.
Sunrise on Saturday morning.
and then all the wedding prep stuff commenced.
After getting my hair done, I went out on a kayak since I couldn’t risk falling in.
Bridal party toast
I had sparkling cider
Jess, who I had only met that weekend, graciously helped both me and Katie with our makeup.
Merry looked flawless, of course.
After getting ready, it was time for a big string of photos.
So we all hung out on standby waiting for the wedding party pictures. Here’s Katie and Kristy all dolled up.

The ceremony was quick and cute, just how I like them.

which was super cute.
I didn’t take many standard reception photos for some reason
Another amazing sunset rolled in during the reception.

Me and Merry with our friend Sean, who I met on the internet in middle school, waaaay before it was acceptable to meet people on the internet. Long story.
Hanging in the hammock during the reception. Neither me or Mikey drink or dance, so we have to make our own fun at weddings as the night wears on and everyone is feeling toasty and dancing.
But from this photo you might think that Mikey had been drinking. haha. Katie, in truest Katie form, stole a microphone from the DJ and randomly sang like 15 songs karaoke style while everyone was dancing. Only she would hijack a mic at her best friends wedding, haha. Katie has a big personality. <3
Her and Mikey got along famously.
Last morning in Tahoe, wishing we didn’t have to leave.
