A visit to NYC: 7/22 – 8/2

In the end of July, my friend Grace screened the documentary “A Band Called Death,” at her house, The Mitten.

The movie was really good and a lot of folks came.

That week, Mikey returned from a week at home in Bethesda.

Long summer afternoons.

That week, Laura and I started practicing for our newly formed bands, Heavy Bangs. We learned a Ramones cover together.

Mid-week, I went up to visit Daniel and see his new life in New York. He moved there in July from Chicago. We met up at my bus and then went down to the Highline, which is one of my new favorite parts of New York.

Home, sweet home. Daniel got an adjunct teaching position at MICA, where we both went to art school, so that prompted his move to NYC after he finished grad school. He’ll commute to Baltimore once a week, which a lot of MICA adjunct professors do.

I went up to help Daniel with a photoshoot (meaning he was helping me by letting me assist him on a gig for easy money. Thanks, D.) so we didn’t have a lot of time actually in New York. We went out to dinner and walked around Brooklyn.

and followed it up with fancy ice cream.

We spent most of the following day doing work stuff. We got breakfast and then went to the rental studio to pick up a big expensive lens. Then we drove to Boston. There was traffic most of the way. It was raining and gloomy so we went up early just to hang out in the fancy hotel we got as part of the shoot.

We had to wake up at 4am to meet the subject for the shoot, John Podesta, chair for the Center of American Progress, and Bill Clinton’s Chief of Staff. We spent the morning on the shoot, then took a nap, then packed up and drove back to NYC in traffic.

Daniel’s new place is a warehouse that they built out into separate studios/rooms. He lives with two other old friends, Friel and Ben.

We hung around for a little while and talked to Ben.

Then Daniel showed me around Long Island City, where he lives.

We headed down to the waterfront, which is always my favorite part of New York. I’m not a big fan of NYC for the most part. Too crowded, too much going on, takes too long to get anywhere, too expensive, etc.

But the waterfront is untouchable.

It’s always nice to see this dude. This year is our tenth year of friendship. I hope for ten more.
