This post is all things Halloween! It feels like it was so long ago already, with the hurricane and elections and everything else going on, but we had a fun and active Halloween.
Two photoblog posts ago, Mikey and I were scavenging for sticks to make a Halloween decoration. Mikey and I used the sticks we had collected early this month to weave a big canopy.
We set to work weaving the sticks so that they made a pretty stiff grid, and then used wire to wrap any major joints. I had gotten this idea a few years ago at a former punk house when someone dropped a big pile of twigs in front of our house. I wove them in a similar way but didn’t have enough to hang it up, so I turned it into a fence for our garden. This year we scavenged enough sticks to do the canopy.
I only had a hunch that it would stay together, but sure enough, when we raised it up and hung it by wires into screws we had screwed into the porch ceiling, it held together like a champ and turned out really beautiful.
It was actually surprisingly easy to make and almost free. (we bought wire, and already had the strings of lights)
I love my house. I can’t wait to keep working on the exterior to make it look really beautiful and lived in. Mainly, I want to make a vining balcony garden from the balcony outside of my room, and also fix up the front yard which leaves a lot to be desired right now. Our back yard could be great with a lot of work too.
One night, pre-halloween week, we all headed out to do the Bates Motel Haunted Hayride. I’ve done this three years in a row now with the same crew. The first year I didn’t even live here yet! I was just visiting for the Philly Zine Fest and happened upon this rad group of friends, who I’m happy to have stayed in touch with ever since. This is at the Haunted Hayride.
Each year, we’ve also gone to Llanarch Diner afterward for late night snacks. This year, Liz Prince, and her boyfriend Kyle (who used to live in Philly), came down for the Bates Motel night.

The following day, we took our trip to Michigan, which you can see in the last photoblog post. When we returned, we carved all of our pumpkins in time for Halloween weekend.
Seeing Mikey in a tshirt makes this seem like forever ago. It’s been freezing the past week and a half. Sigh.
Friday night, West Philly had its traditional Dumpster Derby, where people make downhill cars out of trash and race them down a giant steep hill and block the road for a bit.
As far as I know, it’s permitless and happens pretty fast. Usually the cops come after 15 minutes or so but for some reason this year they just let it be.
That Saturday before Halloween, the Philly Zine Fest happened. It wasn’t quite as hopping as previous years but I didn’t have anything new since Philly Feminist Zine Fest which only happened a couple months ago, so I wasn’t surprised. But! It was fun and Mikey tabled with me, which was great.
Later the same night, Swoon City, my house, had a Halloween party!
I didn’t man my camera for most of the night. Other people took most of these photos on my camera!

Amy June came up from DC!
Rover didn’t understand what “dressed up” means
I failed to dress up. Planning for the party itself and for Philly Zine Fest, I sort of forgot all about planning my own costume.
Mikey and I did make these last minute origami heads out of giant sheets of paper.
They were really silly. I only wore mine for a little while because it was hard to see out of, and hard to hear or talk through. Haha.

I don’t know these people but it’s cool they came to our party
Max and Jenna. Max was a dead pig, and Jenna was a cat.
My roommates, Wednesday and Pugsley. We were going to do the whole Addams Family as a house, but it sort of fell apart. I was going to be the Grandma but it wouldn’t really have held up on it’s own without the whole family.
At one point, Bender put his costume on me, which was fun.
He spent a long time on it and it looked so good.

Two of Laura’s college friends, a never nude and a pig?
Well that’s sweet.
